For many, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time is the very last word in Zelda titles, the entry by which all others are measured. In fact, it’s a frequent contender for the greatest game of all time.

There’s scarcely a moment in the game that isn’t iconic, but Link’s early encounter with the Great Deku Tree is just unforgettable. The leafy guardian of the forest offers the young hero a lot of exposition and a desperate plea: to venture down its trunk and destroy the source of the corruption within it.

Inside the Deku Tree (which is the title of the dungeon, incidentally) is a rather gentle introduction to the blend of puzzle solving and combat that is central to the game’s dungeons. The level design makes fantastic use of the setting, with a lot of climbing and a slightly dark and spooky aesthetic. The Deku Tree’s death on Link’s eradication of Queen Gohma tops the experience off in the most memorable, tear-jerking way.

Later in the game, Link would also venture inside another gigantic beast for another dungeon: Inside Jabu-Jabu’s Belly. This area is marked by its aquatic theme and disturbingly squishy and fleshy obstacles.
