8. Borderlands 2 - The Leviathan

Borderlands 2’s Leviathan certainly isn’t as high-profile as the Riftworm or the Great Deku Tree, but one thing’s for sure: as the game itself states, “He’s really, really, really big.”

As franchise fans will know, this vast critter doesn’t appear in the main campaign of Borderlands 2. Instead, it’s the last boss of the DLC package Captain Scarlett and Her Pirate’s Booty. An enormous variant of the Sand Worm enemies common to the Oasis area, it bars the way to Captain Blade’s legendary treasure.

Shortly after Scarlett announces her plan to have the Vault Hunter(s) killed and claim the treasure for her own, the Leviathan consumes her along with the player(s) as both race to reach it. Inside the creature, a battle against Scarlett and her pet Roscoe (a Rakk Hive) ensues. On their defeat, players find themselves spat out into a boss arena.

The Leviathan is a tough and resilient foe, but its huge size, obvious weak points and numerous minions (handy for Second Winds) make it a challenging yet manageable foe. Only by defeating it can Vault Hunters reach the treasure room that is the focus of this DLC, but climbing on its corpse.

Not much time is spent inside The Leviathan, but it’s a gross, hilarious and typically Borderlands experience while it lasts.
