7. Final Fantasy X - Inside Sin

The Final Fantasy series is another that has a proud tradition of sending the player’s party into long and enemy-laden dungeons. Final Fantasy X’s final such dungeon, Inside Sin, is one of the most mystifying of all.

Sin, of course, is the gargantuan, menacing creature that has long threatened Spira with complete destruction. Tidus and company’s journey concludes inside the belly of the beast itself (literally), as they seek an alternative way to take it down after Yuna rejects the Final Aeon idea.

Inside, the party takes on Seymour Guado one last time, before embarking on the gruelling gauntlet of defeating each of Yuna’s summons, as hosts of Yu Yevon. The latter’s destruction also heralds the destruction of Sin itself, but it was a heck of a ride.

While some stages set inside living creatures have an organic, fleshy feel, this dungeon has an ethereal quality, with an aesthetic strongly influenced by the thoughts and feelings of its denizens (the ‘Blitzball Stadium’ at Dream’s End, for instance). In that sense, it’s reminiscent of Final Fantasy IX’s Memoria and is one of the more fascinating examples of a dungeon set within a living creature.
