10 Biggest WTF Moments In Final Fantasy VII: Rebirth
9. The Moogles
Final Fantasy's moogles are an iconic piece of character design. Squat, dumpy little felines that fly on inexplicably tiny wings, Moogles have been an adorable mainstay of Final Fantasy and its spin-offs since their introduction back in Final Fantasy III. Even when Kingdom Hearts jettisoned the majority of its Final Fantasy connections, it made sure to keep the moogles around.
Rebirth's redesigned moogles, however, look like someone at Square-Enix saw the uproar caused by the dreadful Cats movie from a few years back and thought "any publicity is good publicity".
In a game full of twisted monstrosities birthed by an unholy fusion of science and magic, Rebirth's humanoid-moogles still walk away as the most unsettling creatures you'll clap your eyes on. An unsettling cross between a domestic housecat, a bat and the infamous Ugly Sonic, it's hard to parse what Square were thinking when they upended two decades of design perfection to inflict these objectively ugly abominations on their unsuspecting fanbase.
Given that one of Final Fantasy VII's major villains is a mad scientist who creates hideous monsters by meddling with nature's design, you'd think the game's developers would have known better than to tamper with perfection...
