The Mario series is home to dozens of weird enemies, one of the most well-known being Birdo. According to the manual for Super Mario Bros 2, Birdo is a boy who believes that he is a girl, though it didn't take long for Nintendo to backtrack and insist that Birdo was a girl all along. While Birdo is just one of many strange enemies, none are as strange or shocking as...a piano.

Yeah, you heard that right. The piano in Super Mario 64 easily takes the prize for the most terrifying enemy encounter in a Mario game. While the Mario series is no stranger to light horror themes (generally found in the Ghost House levels) the atmosphere found in the mansion in M64 is on a whole other level. With chilling wind blowing outside the house and genuinely haunting music inside, the mood is set for potential frights €“ and Nintendo certainly delivers. No one who enters the piano room in Super Mario 64 expects Nintendo to pull a jump scare, and especially not using a fanged musical instrument. That industrial chomping sound haunts the dreams of many a gamer to this very day.
