Now, there's nothing wrong with the idea of cross-platform play. In fact, from the point of view of a gamer who doesn't buy into the tribal console war between Microsoft and Sony, it's really the promised land of video games - where gamers of all consoles can play with (or even better, against) each other, bolstering the communities and online longevity of all games.

But for Microsoft to effectively reach out in March and say that the Xbox One was now ready for cross-network play with Sony seemed bizarre, desperate even. In an interview with Gamespot, ID@Xbox Europe head Agostino Simonetta said that Microsoft is inviting any network - including - PSN - to get in on the cross-platform fun.

Combined with Microsoft's closure of several studios and the fact that many of its XBO exclusives are making their way to PC, this news very much felt like Microsoft waving the white flag for this gen's console war.

The fact that Sony refused to directly address Microsoft when probed about this means that their answer is probably a 'no'.
