10 Bleak Game Over Screens That Crushed You

8. System Shock

As a pioneer of the immersive sim genre, the System Shock franchise is known for its unique style of sci-fi horror. Taking place in 2072 in one of the early takes on cyberpunk action, the player takes on the rogue AI SHODAN and its sinister plans for humanity.

Where System Shock and its sequels really excel is in atmosphere. This a dark and often bleak vision of the future where humanity is unknowingly placed into the service of technology it cannot control. Setting the game from a first-person perspective only enhances this tone.

Through the use of various tools, weapons and cyberware, you're able to craft your character to handle any situation. Be that as it may, your enemies are vicious and relentless. A legion of unfeeling machines hellbent on sabotaging your mission. The sense of isolation is equally palpable as there are no NPCs to interact with.

Matching its sinister vibes, the title's game over sequence is no different. It only lasts a few seconds, but in terms of creepiness, it maintains a razor edge. As opposed to simply dying, your protaganist's body in System Shock serves the host for a sinister automatron. The body hangs limp from the centre as the mind is enslaved forever.
