10 Bleak Game Over Screens That Crushed You
7. Resident Evil 2
The Resident Evil franchise has, for the most part, relied on a deep undercurrent of misery to sell the survival horror genre. With the exception of the more action-focused releases, the games often leave the player feeling trapped, hopeless, overwhelmed or a combination of the three.
Low ammo supplies, resource management and hideous foes hunting you down are the guiding focus of the original trilogy. Overcoming these odds and slogging your way through mark the greatest reward for fans of the series. Fail and you're treated to some nasty death sequences. One game goes a step further however and that's Resident Evil 2.
Most Resident Evil games simply fade out or show the character lying dead. For the second entry, their bodies get mangled up by the enemy who killed you. Against a black screen, you'll watch Leon, Claire and other playable characters get piled on by zombies, decapitated by plant monsters or impaled by the boss creatures.
These gruesome deaths alongside the words "You Died" put Resident Evil 2 a step above other entries in the franchise, hammering down on the player far more than its contemporaries. It drags out the punishment of getting a game over and twists the knife even further.
