6. Kill Your Friends Or Cause The Apocalypse - Far Cry 5

The Far Cry series is known for its bleak endings, but Far Cry 5 truly takes the cake for screwing the player over beyond any hope.

The title's protagonist, Rook, spends the entire game fighting Joseph Seed's cult, trying to rescue their fellow officers, and finally putting the madman behind bars.

You feel like an indestructible force taking on the horde of brainwashed cultists. However, when it comes to dealing with Joseph himself, you couldn't feel any more powerless.

Although you appear to have the man cornered in the finale, the game makes it obvious that something isn't right. That's when you're given two options: you can walk away without arresting Joseph or follow through with the plan.

Choosing to arrest Joseph anyway will trigger a nuclear explosion, after which the cultist will kidnap you to his bunker as everyone around you dies.

For this reason you might think the alternative may be better—coming out empty-handed but alive and well.

Well, except that's not the case here either. As soon as you leave the scene with your team, it turns out Joseph's cult has brainwashed you, and upon hearing your trigger song on the radio, you prepare to murder all your friends on the spot.

Lovely!
