10 Bold Predictions For The New Gaming Generation
5. The PS5 Gets Backwards Compatibility For PS1 & PS2 (Eventually)
Easily the most disappointing thing about the PS5 is its lack of backwards compatibility support for prior generations - particularly the PS1 and PS2.
While Microsoft has introduced extensive backwards compatibility options across the Xbox ecosystem, the PS5 only allows players to play disc versions of PS4 games.
And though some suspect this is because Sony would simply rather re-sell you classic games rather than let you play enhanced versions of your old discs for free, it's quite possible Sony are just dragging their feet with figuring out the technical aspects.
After all, this is the company that only allowed players to change their PSN usernames last year, so don't be surprised if, a few years from now, Sony reveals fully functional backwards compatibility for PS1 and PS2.
We'll give them a pass for PS3 given the console's infamously tricky system architecture, but being able to insert, say, Metal Gear Solid 2 into the PS5 and play it with an unlocked framerate and improved textures would be a massive boon to the brand.
