10 Bold Predictions For The New Gaming Generation
2. PSVR 2 Becomes The Best-Selling VR Headset Ever
VR was one of the most significant hardware innovations this prior generation, and while it's still far from being a fully mainstream, widely-adopted product, it has carved out a neat niche for itself with PC VR and PlayStation VR in particular.
With PSVR holding the lion's share of the premium VR market, there's been much speculation about when Sony will reveal a next-gen VR headset.
Given that patent documents suggest Sony is currently experimenting with a new headset which will be thinner and lighter than its predecessor and also introduce haptic feedback, it seems like a foregone conclusion that PSVR 2 will arrive some time within the next few years.
And given that the PS5 is already Sony's hottest-selling console at launch, it'll be quite the platform on which to release a shiny new headset that's a massive graphical leap from the dated original PSVR, while also hopefully boasting nifty new controllers and minimal wires.
This major uptick in visual fidelity and ease-of-use will position PSVR 2 as the must-own VR headset for the average gamer, resulting in not only AAA developers making games for it as their lead platform, but in turn causing PSVR 2 to eventually becoming the breakout, best-selling VR headset of all time.
Again, it's a bold claim, but if Sony takes their time to make the new headset an epochal improvement over the brilliant-but-deeply-flawed first effort, they'll take another huge bite out of the growing VR market.
