10 Botched Features That Almost Ruined Iconic Video Games

8. Taking Malaria Tablets In Far Cry 2

Far Cry 2 was full of strange mechanical choices that proved to be divisive amongst fans, and while this entry could have easily been about the game's reliance on weapons so flimsy that they essentially disintegrated after only firing a few mags, it was the Malaria mechanic that provoked the ire of most players.

Establishing that the main character had contracted Malaria in the opening, the title required you to maintain a steady supply of medicine to keep the disease at bay. Miss out on one of your doses and you'd become incredibly weak, lowering your chances of survival tremendously.

The times you had to take the pills weren't completely random though, but were actually triggered by progressing through specific beats in the game. This only made the whole feature worse however, as you could spend hours in the wilderness forgetting you even had the disease at all, while completing a concentrated dose of story missions would result in being overwhelmed with the constant need to find more medicine.
