7. Having To Manually Collect Pickups In Wolfenstein: The New Order

2014's reboot of Wolfenstein proved that classic first-person shooter design is still king. Moving away from the philosophies of modern-military shooters and embracing old-school mechanics, the game managed to feel contemporary despite looking to the past for inspiration.

Unfortunately, although most of the inspiration the game took from FPSs of yore translated perfectly, some mechanics that were brought over had no place in a modern action release.

The worst offender by far however was the inclusion of ammo and health pickups. Although the flow of the game encouraged players to keep on the move and avoid cover, the fact that you had to hover over ammo, health and armour and manually pick them up often resulted in breaks in battles while you scrambled to re-equip yourself enough to continue.

It could have facilitated a unique mix of combat and resource management during firefights, but for the most part it only ended up with players running out of ammo right when a giant mech was seconds away from killing them.
