The Tony Hawk franchise was at its apex around the early 00s, it seemed that the arcade skater couldn't put a foot wrong and was consistently improving on the formula to create truly memorable experiences. This would, of course, collapse into an embarrassing mess as the 00s progressed but right at the top of this peak was the immaculate Tony Hawk's Underground.

Much of the gameplay had already been perfected in earlier titles, what Underground did was expand the scope. Maps were bigger and felt more realistic, giving the arcade gameplay some much-needed gravity.

The focus shifted towards creating your own skater, rather than playing as the iconic Tony and friends, giving players another reason to connect to their chosen avatar. On top of all this was a gigantic, award-winning playlist (yes, the MTV Video Music Awards do count) that ranged from Kiss to DJ Q-bert.

Tony Hawk's Underground gave players everything they could have possibly wanted, and wrapped it in a beautiful package that both satisfied the solo player and the couch co-op, HORSE playing friendships alike.
