After the blockbuster success of the first Ratchet and Clank in 2002, it would have been easy for Insomniac and Sony to just churn out a paint-by-numbers sequel that gave players the exact same experience. A year later, however, Ratchet And Clank: Going Commando released.

There were, of course, similarities to the first title. The rhythm of combat was the same, the mechanics were similar and there weren't any dramatic shifts in graphical fidelity. What Insomniac focused on changing, however, was evolving how weapons worked in the game.

Going Commando was set in an entirely alternate universe, so besides Ratchet's trusted wrench, Ratchet has a whole new set of weapons to play with, instantly changing how the game feels to play. Not only were these weapons new and fun to play with, but they steadily upgraded as you used them, eventually changing again when fully upgraded.

What Insomniac did with Going Commando was understand what needed innovating set Going Commando apart as its own unique experience, while keeping it similar enough to ensure the sequel didn't stray away from what made the first game brilliant.
