Hellblade: Seuna's Sacrifice is not without its flaws. The game is a little linear, and that bloody blindness trial sequence was a legendary p*sstake, but overall it is a work of wonderful imagination, beautifully presented and profoundly told.

All this coming from Ninja Theory, whose previous output had been action-oriented and only ever hitting the dizzying heights of quite good.

Heavenly Sword and Enslaved: Odyssey To The West were solid 3 star titles which struggled to deliver the epic, sweeping stories they promised, and DMC: Devil May Cry (presumably short for Devil May Cry: Devil May Cry) was unpopular with series fans due to its divergence from the core series.

When Hellblade was announced as an "Independent AAA" title made by a team of 15 people, it was impossible not to be skeptical.

However, the game was a marvel. Its story, revolving around mental illness through the filter of grim Norse mythology was stunning, thanks to a spellbinding central performance from Melina Juergens.

The various set pieces throughout the game were memorable and uniquely realised, and made for an unexpected hit that looks set to further impress with its upcoming sequel.
