10 Brilliant Video Games That Surprised Everyone - Commenter Edition
4. Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order
Star Wars video games, while not universally terrible, have not had a particularly great run. Sure there are some great titles, such as Dark Forces, the original Battlefront series and the legendary Knights Of The Old Republic - but there have been many, many more rushed, cynical and gimmicky tie-ins relegated to the Star Wars wasteland over the 40-plus years that they have existed.
Most recently, Electronic "Arts", having acquired the Star Wars licence, set about ruining the IP with their usual gusto, first by rebooting the Battlefront series as extortion racket first and playable game second. They then cancelled Visceral Studios' Project Ragtag, a title which actually showed some promise.
Then Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order followed, and much to the surprise of just about everyone, it's great. Admittedly you can't score points on the basis of the game simply not being a live-service cash grab, but Fallen Order stands on its own merits.
Utilising a slightly more accessible variation on Souls-like combat, Metroidvania influences and rewarding exploration, it's a standout title that succeeds in fleshing out the galaxy far, far away. Also, true to Star Wars tradition, the protagonist gets upstaged by a droid.
