10 Brilliantly Written Characters Ruined By Game Mechanics

3. Preston Garvey - Fallout 4

Preston Garvey was easily one of the most hated characters in Fallout 4. His voice actor's line delivery was very un-ethusiastic, his faction felt very one-dimensional, and most importantly, he would never shut up about settlements that needed help. What his character ended up being for most players was an insufferable quest dispenser that constantly urged you to rescue nameless settlers all over the Commonwealth.

This didn't really have to be the only quality of Preston's character, though. You see, if Preston liked you well enough, he would open up to you and reveal an interesting struggle in his character.

It makes sense that Preston sounded so detached in the game, as the man was suffering from severe depression. As the last Minuteman, he understood that he was the last glimpse of hope for the people of the Commonwealth, but at the same time, it was hard for him to fulfil this role, as he himself stopped believing the Minutemen's cause could ever succeed.

Preston's inner conflict adds a lot of depth to not just his character but also his faction. However, because he was the Minutemen's go-to quest giver, the players didn't really get to see and appreciate this side of him.
