2. Eye Surgery - Dead Space 2

I know you might have heard this one touted before but there’s no way around it, this is just about the most brutal thing a video game has ever made you do and as a result I can’t not put it on this list.

Dead Space 2 is a masterwork of survival horror, from its enemies to its atmosphere, there’s very little it doesn’t get right. So, when it comes to forcing you into a wildly nasty situation with a life-or-death outcome we should have known they wouldn’t be letting us off easy. In one section you need to do eye surgery on yourself and, look, even the success state here has you watch a needle burrow into your pupil and bleed from the wound once it’s removed.

Like, tell me your eye doesn’t hurt a bit watching this play out.

It’s the failure state, though, which we really need to bring attention to here. I actually haven’t played Dead Space 2 so when I was watching through the gameplay videos for this one and saw the fail event where the machine just burrows into his head and it explodes in blood I just said oh my god and started laughing because my brain has no stored appropriate reaction to that.

It’s a little hilarious, a lot tense, completely brutal, and a great example of a scene most of us wish we didn’t have to control.
