7. Dragon's Lair (SNES)
I want to make it perfectly clear that every iteration of this classic series is trying to kill you at all times.
You are then promptly placed into the shoes of Dirk the Daring, a brave knight en route to save the princess. Bravery, however, counts for very little in this game.
This side-scrolling platformer pulls absolutely zero punches in letting you know how hard this entire experience will be.
Unless you start moving straight away, you're as good as dead. Yet upon taking your very first step in the game, a deadly snake pops up from the ground mere feet in front of you, and unless you have cat-like reflexes that allow you to kill this opening enemy, it will take a chunk of your life before you even have the chance breathe.
With only three lives to begin with and extra lives being extremely hard to come by, taking damage here could doom your playthrough when it has barely begun.
Monsters constantly burst out of the ground and phase into being with little indication, and this is just within the opening seconds.
