Of course, when it comes to heartstring-pulling deaths in Final Fantasy VII, a certain flower seller’s tragic demise tends to spring to mind first. While Dyne doesn’t get the same spotlight, his sorry fate is no less awful to witness.

The party encounters Dyne, Marlene’s biological father, at the Corel Prison. He, too, lost everything at Shinra’s hands when they attacked his town, but unlike Barret, he wasn’t driven to try and fight back to make the world a better place.

Instead, he’s bitter and vengeful, forcing Barret into a one-on-one boss fight even though the latter pleads with him not to. On his defeat, Dyne is told that Marlene is still alive, though he still insists that everything is lost because she wouldn’t recognise him if he saw her again.

“Barret… don’t… make… don’t ever make Marlene… cry,” he utters, before stepping backwards and allowing himself to fall from the cliff edge. The grief-stricken Barret reels from this, as does the player, recognising that they had a direct hand in what just happened.
