10 Cancelled Video Games You Can Actually Play
4. Resident Evil 1.5
When developing Resident Evil 2, a version named Resident Evil 1.5 by fans was completely scrapped. That doesn't mean you can't play this canceled version though.
In 2013, the code for an unfinished build of Resident Evil 1.5 called the 40% build (as it was only 40% complete) was found after 15 years of searching by a dedicated group of fans.
After the death of an American Capcom employee who owned the unfinished build, the game was put up for sale where it was picked up by someone who went by the name "The Curator". The Curator offered to sell the demo for $10,000 to a man who called himself "Alzaire". Alzaire couldn't afford it.
After a while, they settled on a price of $8000. Eventually, a modified version of the game was released to the public after some debate as to whether the game should be modified at all.
That is a really simplified version of the fascinating story that led to Resident Evil 1.5 being playable. A book was published on the topic called "The Hunt for Resident Evil 1.5", which is definitely worth a read if this interests you.
