10 Challenging Video Games That Are Endlessly Rewarding

8. Wasteland 2

Monster Hunter
InXile Entertainment

In 2007, inXile Entertainment reacquired the rights to Wasteland from Konami, and set about developing a sequel to the 1988 original.

Released in 2013, Wasteland 2 was heavily inspired by the likes of Fallout 1 & 2, and is consequently regarded as a spiritual successor. The game – a turn-based strategy game – emphasised difficulty over blatant accessibility, but the result was a genuinely rewarding experiencing in which players worked incredibly hard for their victories.

In the game, every enemy is a potential danger, and – caught off guard – an entire team can be overwhelmed and annihilated within a single turn, making it more challenging than its closest contemporaries, such as XCOM.

Occasionally frustrating, the game requires exceptional patience, but this is equally its greatest accomplishment, watching a manoeuvre executed perfectly, knowing any mistake might cost you dearly.
