By 2008, long-time fans of the Crash Bandicoot series had a darn solid idea of what the fuzzy orange marsupial looked like. After all, the original trilogy offered some of the most beloved and technically solid platforming action anywhere on the PS1. The little guy had become a household name, and had quite a reputation to uphold as a result.

Sadly, after Crash Bandicoot 3: Warped (1998) and Crash Team Racing (1999), he never really reached those heights again. This wasn’t for the want of trying, as several Crash titles emerged in the following years, but they seemed to make one of two mistakes: either straying too far from the formula that made Crash a star in the first place, or rigidly clinging to it like a furious toddler who wants those sweets in the supermarket.

Crash of the Titans and Crash: Mind Over Mutant both updated the bandicoot’s model, which is always a perilous thing to do. If there’s one thing gamers don’t take kindly to, it’s a heavy-handed revamp to a super popular design. This new stylized furball failed to strike a chord with many, and became emblematic of Crash's 'edgy' teenager years.
