3. Professor Layton
The Professor Layton series has been one of the most successful third party games to grace a Nintendo console. I guess that has something to do with the lack of competition in that particular department, but every Professor Layton game has been at least pretty good and when they're coming out practically every year, it's hard not to call them a big success. Layton perhaps doesn't have as instantly recognisable of a name as Mario, but he's certainly up there and that means he deserves a place in Smash Bros. The ultimate gentleman may have a knack for solving puzzles but he's also mean with a sword. He can hold his own against Link and Marth as well as firing a slot-machine gun (from Professor Layton and the Lost Future) and going Oddjob-style by firing his hat around the arena. There might be something to be made of the Wii U screen solving puzzles mid-battle too, perhaps in his final smash? What you can't deny is that his victory taunt on the score screen would be classic. "That's what a gentleman does".
