10 Characters Who KNEW They Were In Video Games

1. Sam Fisher And Lambert - Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory

The final entry on our self-referential, existential, fourth-wall breaking list refers to Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory. During Splinter Cell and Pandora Tomorrow, the first two games in the franchise, players were reminded of a certain rule set by Lambert. Three alarms and the mission is over, or some variation of this sentiment that taught players about the game’s core mechanic of alarms.

During Chaos Theory Sam says to Lambert, “Let me guess, three alarms and the mission is over?” Clearly a joke remark referring to the events of the first two games. This makes sense, even in-game, as they both spoke about this rule. Yet, this time, Lambert replies, “Of course not. This is no video game, Fisher.” That’s the fuzziness I quite enjoy about this entry. Not only have they changed the rules, but they also dropped a slight fourth wall break in there, even if it’s not completely self-referential.

Perhaps it’s the point of Splinter Cell moving forward in its mechanics and gameplay, perhaps it was just a silly nod. However, both stealth game franchises, Splinter Cell and Metal Gear, have been known for fourth wall breaking and referencing one another, so, I’m allowing it.
