As in real life (provided you’re of legal age and indulging responsibly), getting drunk and having bonkers fun is a common occurrence in countless simulated worlds.

Sure, doing so in, say, Afterparty, Fallout 76, Bioshock, and Space Quest: Chapter I – The Sarien Encounter affects gameplay to some degree, but getting sloshed has rarely been as disastrous as in Red Dead Redemption.

Explicitly, typing “I’m Drunk As A Skunk and Twice As Smelly” into the options menu irreversibly puts your cowboy into a state of heavy intoxication. Prior to it becoming widespread knowledge online, you had to find the phrase above a door near your room in Rathskeller Fork. Thus, the mere discovery of it was justification for celebration inside – and maybe outside – of the game.

Once enabled, it’s gets incredibly hard to control antihero John Marston, as he’d rather fall down, swerve sideways, and step over himself than respectably walk in a straight line. Naturally, it’s just as tough riding horses and shooting enemies, so it’s a fool’s errand to try to achieve any meaningful progression until Marston sobers up.
