2. Gunstar Heroes
Gunstar Heroes was one of the favourite games of my childhood. It was a unique game that was also a 2D side scrolling game. It featured unique game-play, mini games and different themed levels. Every level would have different movement mechanics, objectives and a quirky spin. Though, Gunstar Heroes, if released today would suffer from the same industry changes that Golden Axe would. It consisted of five levels and could be completed in around an hour. This brings us back to the point that gamers now expect games with length to them. Nowadays, things like Call of Duty's campaign are considered short at about seven hours. I think the main reason change has occurred is because of how mainstream the industry has become. Instead of distractions, games are now immersive entertainment pieces that require the user's full attention and effort. The main point of criticism for Gunstar Heroes would be the incredibly short length of the game. Other aspects of the game would also be pounced on. The combat and game-play would be called too simplistic and boring. The absence of online cooperative play would be noticed and the lack of any unlockables or rewards also frowned upon. The changes in industry have caused gamers to change the way they look at and play video games and also changed they expectations.
