3. Doom
Another classic game is Doom. Doom is considered the game that popularised the first person shooter video game and also a landmark in video game history. It was highly successful, gaining critical acclaim, spawning several sequels and was ported to numerous different platforms, even modern ones. Though, still, even a game as popular and loved as Doom would still fail if released today. If released nowadays, it would called repetitive, simple and boring. The game-play of Doom is very simple; kill the enemies, get collectibles and reach the end. When Doom was released, gaming was still a new industry. The game-play and features of Doom were revolutionary, changing the path of video games forever. Now, players and critics would say the game-play is not varied enough, it would get stale quickly. Games now need to be complex and offer different opportunities for players, not just forcing them down a very narrow path. The game-play and game mechanics of Doom have been copied countless times and are now very outdated. The idea of having no objectives apart from getting from Point A to Point B and having to get different coloured key cards to gain access to different doors would be called unoriginal. To bring up a previous point, the length of the game would also be looked down on. It may be hard to imagine that Doom would fail considering out widely loved it is. One could also say that is highly unfair to talk harshly about game features when it was this game that invented most of them. Although, it does highlight how different the games industry is.
