10 Classic Survival Horror Video Games That Are Still Terrifying

1. Silent Hill 3

Whilst its predecessor gets all the glory for its bleak tone, suffocating atmosphere, and overt psycho-sexual imagery, Silent Hill 3 has always been quietly wonderful in its own horrifying way.

A direct sequel to the original - but with loose ties to Silent Hill 2 - players are put in the shoes of sassy teenager Heather Mason, whose seemingly ordinary life is thrown into chaos when a series of terrifying supernatural occurrences begin to plague her. Before she can even process what's happening, a mysterious cult approaches her and things just get worse from there.

Much like the original, Silent Hill 3 wastes no time in bringing the scares. The opening theme park level sets the tone perfectly, and each new locale seeks to up the ante with a barrage of gruesome gore gags and finely crafted scares.

All of the usual Silent Hill shenanigans are out in full force, but compared to other entries in the series, everything is more startlingly immediate and visceral this time around. With a greater focus on body horror and yonic imagery that really gets under your skin.

Silent Hill 3 remains an intense and genuinely stomach-churning ride that will no doubt scare you senseless several times over.
