Nowadays, there are umpteenth Lovecraft adaptations for fans to sink their teeth into it. Be it in films, television shows, or video games, the supposedly 'unadaptable' works of H.P. Lovecraft are making their way into mainstream culture due to the more advanced movie-making techniques that are more readily available.

Although video games have been flying the flag for Lovecraftian horror since the days of Alone in the Dark, few games have managed to accurately portray the man's work and still be a pants-wetting good time.

Enter the largely overlooked Call of Cthulu: Dark Corners of the Earth.

This Xbox/PC title put players in the shoes of mentally unstable private detective Jack Walters, who is hired to investigate the goings-on in Innsmouth as the town has seemingly cut itself off from the rest of the world.

There are countless tense stealth sections and precarious battles against unspeakable sea monsters, but it's the consistently eerie atmosphere that really hammers home the fear. The crazed townsfolk and gnarly monsters are pretty scary on their own, but the constant fear of never being alone, coupled with a lack of understanding of the greater forces at play make this one of the very best Lovecraft adaptations out there.
