10 Classic Survival Horror Video Games That Are Still Terrifying

Given the bombastic blood-soaked chaos that the Doom franchise has been gleefully peddling as of late, it's hard to even imagine a time where the series could be thought of as scary. But back in 2004, there was no shortage of players that were absolutely cacking themselves when playing Doom 3 for the first time.

Taking place mostly inside a derelict spacecraft, Doom 3 makes its mission statement clear from the get-go. You are never safe, everything wants you dead, and you're going to need to throw everything you've got at these creatures to stay alive.

Doubling down on the more horrific elements of the previous games, Id Software crafted one of the most remarkable shooters of the era. One that forced players to temporarily holster their firearms and use a flashlight to navigate dark areas.

A simple gameplay mechanic in theory, but when coupled with the outstanding monster design and bone-chilling soundscapes, made for one of the most intense shooter experiences you could ever hope to play.

Even when the action moves to more fantastical settings, the intensity never lets up for a second. Making this one for those that really love to stare into the abyss and unload everything they've got into it.
