10 Classic Survival Horror Video Games That Are Still Terrifying

Project Siren

With only three games to its name, the Siren series has long-lingered in obscurity, but anybody who has dared to play them will certainly never forget their ice-cold grasp.

Largely remembered for its signature 'sight jacking' mechanic, in which players are able to see through the eyes of their pursuers, Siren offers a very unique and overwhelming horror experience that has lost none of its potency in the years since its release.

An unexplained supernatural disaster has occurred within the rural Japanese town of Handu, turning many of its residents into zombie-like beings that bleed from their eyes and attack anyone they come into contact with. Each stage puts you in the shoes of a different character - all of whom possess the ability to sight jack - and through a combination of stealth and makeshift weapons, you must guide them to safety whilst completing various objectives.

Siren is certainly not for the faint-hearted, nor for those who don't enjoy a challenge. It's notoriously difficult, and the trial-and-error nature of the game can be frustrating at times, but it's worth playing for the atmosphere alone.

The sequels are certainly worth a look too, but like with many series, it's best to start with the original.
