10 Classic Video Games That DON'T Hold Up

Here is the part of the list where I get really scared about upsetting you, so let’s just say Final Fantasy VII is absolutely one of the best games in the series. It’s also really old and hasn’t stood up super well which is probably why they’re halfway through remaking it (and the remake is absolutely fantastic).

I feel like that about covered it but let’s dig a little deeper anyway.

A wonderful story with a phenomenal soundtrack and gorgeous visuals, Final Fantasy VII suffers only from being a product of its time. Is it still one of the greatest games ever made? Absolutely. But it’s hard to deny that 25 years on the visuals of course don’t hit like they used to. The blockheads would be pretty funny to a newcomer and the once gorgeous pre-rendered backgrounds just look pixelated now. 3D PS1 games all largely suffer from the same issues as time has gone on, and it's only due to FF6 being 2D that that entry has aged better visually. Similarly, the once innovative combat system grates a little more now, the frame rate drops a tonne in battles, and the English localisation is pretty terrible.

Much like GTA 3, while it’s incredibly cool that FF7 was the first 3D entry, time has certainly taken a toll.

But like we said, the Remake is a slam dunk so if you can’t vibe with the original we’ve got this one. And the second half will hopefully come out sometime before the heat death of the universe.
