10 Console Games That Will Probably Be Banned In China
2. Whore of the Orient (PS4, Xbox One, PC)
The Whore of the Orient: need I say more? The last time we heard about the game, it's entire staff was fired, putting production on hold, and it was accused of racism by multiple sources including a Chinese city-Councillor, even going so far as inciting a potential human rights commission complaint. The first tidbits of gameplay showed a terribly generic white male protagonist beating up generic Asian males. Not only was it not very well presented or animated (granted it was an alpha-build), it was - and this is an understatement - very problematic; to a Resident Evil 5 level. But the issue isn't cut and clean. The title of the game was once a Western nickname for Shanghai. Just because something has an unfortunate, even deliberately problematic name doesn't mean it believes in its own title. The title can often be a red herring, tricking the player into thinking a status quo only to subvert it. Since we know nothing about the game's plot, we can't say if our protagonist is even a good guy. However, it's impossible to say. The Whore of the Orient may be just as distasteful as its name appears. If time-travel violates China's utmost respect of history, showing the horrors of the opium trade - especially from white perspective - will likely not pass, if the game is ever even released. (Probable) Official Statement: Banned for "utterly shaming China and grossly disrespecting its history," and for "poor and unconvincing animation."
