Is the above header really anything new in terms of how Hideo Kojima designs his characters? And that doesn't necessarily exclusively refer to female characters, but ALL of his characters. In Metal Gear Solid 1- a pixelated ugly game released in the 90s- if you completed a certain objective fast enough you had the opportunity to see Meryl in her underwear, and even her shirt had the outline of nipples. In short, Kojima has previous. You can trace these instances all throughout his esteemed legacy as a video game director - we are discussing a man here who stuck in a segment where players did cartwheels to incapacitate guards as a naked Raiden in Metal Gear Solid 2. Now all of the sudden, because he creates a female sniper character that walks around half naked the world is scrutinizing him? Keep in mind Kojima has explicitly stated over Twitter that this wasnt done solely for eroticism, but that the character of Quiet has an interesting back story and reasons for presenting herself this way on a battlefield, similar to most scenes involving sexual content in his games Is Kojima just driven by his carnal desires? Admittedly, this is always a possibility but thats not what should irk you: this is simply a kneejerk reaction from professional journalists to present themselves as politically correct, due to people like Anita Sarkeesian pushing a ridiculous feminist agenda on the industry. Why journalists feel the need to bend over backwards is a mystery to me. I played Tomb Raider this year and slaughtered men with machine guns, pick-axes, and more as a completely reimagined Lara Croft that stripped away overt sexualization in favor of a determined and strong willed characterization that like the tagline implies - birthed a survivor. Sure the game is critically lauded and deservedly so, but I dont see these people mentioning that. Games are an entertainment medium like film, television, books... all of which occasionally objectify women or pile on unnecessary nudity. So what? Nobody is forcing you to participate. You cant argue but the children! because most of this is stuff is rated Mature or R anyway, so theoretically you have failed as a parent if your child is experiencing something that you think is corrupting their mind. Is Kojima objectifying women? I say no, these are motifs and the style of his games. Whether its scantily clad women, shirtless men fighting, homoeroticism pranks, and more, you should be prepared for a great game with a great story despite its lunacy.
