10 Controversial Video Games Everybody Totally Misunderstood
9. Mass Effect Was A 'Sex Simulator'
Chances are there's going to be a lot of Fox News popping up in this list - they're simply the kings of taking a completely threadbare news story and running with it until the resulting patchwork is suffocating the Western hemisphere.
Case in point: Mass Effect's seemingly random portrayal as a 'sex simulator', coming from a good, ooh, say two at the most sex scenes? Anyone who'd played Bioware's sci-fi magnum opus knew the idea of watching characters shack up was the last thing the game was being sold on, but Fox News dug their talons in deep. Across the game's launch they literally printed and repeatedly supported their own lies, describing the game having "full digital nudity and the ability for players to engage in graphic sex".
What was the scene they were referring to though? Well, all of them in theory, but the one that got the most airtime was this 'raunchy' clip between Shepard and Liara:
'Graphic', right? Player participation, yes? Well...
It came to a head across 2008, when EA themselves had to step in and quell the false reporting, to which they eventually abated as only a couple anchors and 'specialists' apologised off air. Lastly, if you're questioning just how many people took it all seriously, just look at the very fact Donald Trump is even doing anything in a political context.
