10 Controversial Video Games Everybody Totally Misunderstood

5. DOOM - Blamed For Columbine Massacre

Everyone from video games to Marilyn Manson was blamed for the abhorrent Columbine shooting of 1999, following America (and by proxy, the world) struggling to understand how such a disgusting attack could happen on their own soil.

Pretty much everything the shooters Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold showed an interest in became the go-to accused properties of choice, with one game in particular standing out from the rest - the gore-filled Doom, of which Harris noted he'd used a shotgun in the attack, specifically because of how much he enjoyed the one in the game.

Obviously in reality, this falls under the same interpretation banner as any maniacally-minded individual taking 'influence' from something and developing their own twisted read on it. Literature has Catcher in the Rye implicated as the reason Mark David Chapman shot John Lennon, and across gaming history, Doom stands out as one of those times thousands of people needed something to blame, only for Doom's blood-soaked exterior to be the perfect candidate.
