10 Controversial Video Games Everybody Totally Misunderstood
4. Grand Theft Auto III - 'Encouraged' You To Kill Prostitutes
"Have you heard about that game where you can kill prostitutes?" became a byline for GTA III in the early noughties, they'd say - as if somehow Rockstar's world-changing release only gave you one thing to do.
It's certainly easy to look back on it now and brush all the reactionary criticisms and 'in-depth studies' under the rug, but at the time, the sheer amount of stories centring not on the fact you could pilot a flaming car into a squad of innocent people - but that you could rob a hooker, now thatwas news.
The whole thing still reverberates around the cosmos to this day, as writer and journo-legend Adam Sessler once noted in a recent radio interview that he'd been asked about that game where you "kill hookers for points", proving there are those who still characterised their first open-world experience by targeting prostitutes, rather than, say, exploring the freakin' world itself?!
