10 Controversial Video Games That Are Insanely Tame Today
9. Perfect Dark (2000)
During their tenure as a third party developer for Nintendo during the heydays of the fifth console generation, Rare produced what would go on to be some of the most beloved Nintendo 64 games ever released. Though they would later be bought by Microsoft and forced into obscurity, games like Banjo-Kazooie, Donkey Kong 64, and Goldeneye are still fan favorites and industry highlights.
2000's Perfect Dark is one of the lesser-known Rare titles, though that isn't for a lack of publicity. In fact, the game stirred up quite a bit of controversy when it was first released, as it was the first ever M-rated game released on a Nintendo console. Granted, the ESRB rating system was still a pretty new thing at the time.
Though certainly serviceable for the era, Rare's Perfect Dark seems so incredibly dated today that it's difficult to believe that anyone would find it objectionable. If James Bond's unique brand of flirtatious espionage didn't raise any eyebrows when translated to Nintendo's hardware, it doesn't make sense that Perfect Dark would have.
