10 Controversial Video Games That Caused Major Moral Panic

8. Silent Hill: Homecoming (2007)

silent hill homecoming This game is the sixth one in the Silent Hill franchise. It concerns the story of Alex Shepherd - a soldier who has come back to his home town of Shepherd's Glen to find his brother and predictably his home town has gone balls to the walls. After investigating Shepherd's Glen, Alex ends up in Silent Hill where he crosses paths with 'The Order' - a shadowy organisation who know a heck of a lot about Alex and his brother, more than Alex knows about them. In the end, tragic details about Alex and his brother are revealed and Alex must keep his head on to overcome The Order. The game had serious censorship issues in Australia and Germany. In Australia, The OFLC (Office of Film and Literature Classification) refused to classify the game on account of its "high impact violence and bloody effects" The censors did not like the parts in the game where body parts are drilled and an enemy's body is bisected. The game was thus banned. The German version of the game had similar issues. It was postponed until 2009 because the uncensored version was outright rejected by the censors. It was edited to receive an 18+ Certificate. In October 2010, a region in Germany seized all UK copies of the game for the Xbox 360 for its violence, effectively banning its sale in Germany.
