10 Convoluted Video Game Lores Even The Creators Don't Understand
2. Metal Gear Solid
Before there was Death Stranding, of course there was Metal Gear Solid, and since Hideo Kojima's stealth-action franchise became a AAA mainstay some 20 years ago, its storylines have become increasingly ridiculous and, let's be honest, coke-huffingly insane.
But that has in many ways been Metal Gear Solid's charm, to combine state-of-the-art visuals and gameplay with an overwrought, knowingly daft narrative to rival the most overbearing anime.
And the icing on on the cake? Just as with Death Stranding, Kojima wilfully admits that it doesn't really make a lick of sense.
Shortly after the release of Metal Gear Solid 4, he said, "I personally get confused too about the whole timeline and saga of Metal Gear Solid...This is especially tricky when you create the future first and then go back in time to create something new. There are a lot of small aspects where sometimes it doesn't match completely."
It's a fitting comment given that Metal Gear Solid V's flagrant retconning saw the series at its most impossibly convoluted yet. And yet Kojima, the absolute maniac, clearly loves torturing his fanbase so.
