The Kingdom Hearts franchise has a mythology so ridiculously dense that only the most hardcore fans can really make head or tail of it.

Most players simply tolerate the absurdly convoluted storytelling in order to savour the fun combat and entertaining characters, even if having a clear idea of the overarching narrative is a challenge many just can't be bothered with.

This fact isn't lost on series creator Tetsuya Nomura, though, who himself has become tied up in knots trying to keep track of all the character relationships and how the cumbersome thicket that is Kingdom Hearts' lore all slots together.

In an interview, Nomura said, "What is the most confusing is that, because there are so many characters in this storyline now, it’s hard to keep track of who actually met who already. I’m always like, 'Okay, so who knows who in this situation, and who’s meeting this person for the first time?' And that always gets really confusing."

He added, "When I was writing the scenarios [for Kingdom Hearts III], I started to be confused with it as well myself. It is kind of complicated in that sense."

Well, that's a relief...kinda?
