10 Convoluted Video Game Lores Even The Creators Don't Understand
7. Half-Life
Though we're all excited about the recent announcement of the fantastic-looking VR title Half-Life: Alyx, don't expect the game to shed much additional light on the exact canonicity of the nebulous Half-Life universe.
Valve has always taken a suspiciously ambiguous approach to fleshing out the franchise's storyline, with series writer Marc Laidlaw infamously rubbishing the very concept of a concrete continuity.
When quizzed about what is and isn't canon in Half-Life lore, Laidlaw memorably retorted, "canon itself is non-canon," and that neither he nor Valve has any "official stance" on "issues of canonicity", or what is a tangible element of the Half-Life universe.
The series has made many retcons to its own internal mythology over the years, effectively confirming that Valve as a whole has little interest in maintaining a continuity, and clearly has no issues with contradicting itself if it suits the agenda of a new game.
Despite how insane this answer has driven fans for years, it's actually weirdly refreshing for a major developer to shun the concept of a stringent continuity altogether. If nothing else, it certainly allows more freedom for future Half-Life media - despite its rather ironic scarcity.
