10 Convoluted Video Game Lores Even The Creators Don't Understand
5. Halo
Halo is one of the most imaginative and beloved AAA video game franchises of all time, even if it's fair to say that the release of Halo 5: Guardians left many fans bitterly disappointed.
With more than 50 novels and comics printed to accentuate the Halo universe, it's little surprise that 343 Industries, who took over development on the franchise from Halo 4 onwards, lost sight of what fans were actually interested in.
Halo 5 attempted to deepen the Halo world by having players split their playtime between franchise icon Master Chief and new character Spartan Locke.
The consensus from fans and critics alike was that, in an attempt to expand the universe, 343 had only made it more muddled, while failing to understand just how much of the series' identity was embodied by Master Chief.
In a recent interview, franchise director Frank O'Connor admitted their mistakes. He said, "We took some digs for storytelling in Halo 5, but they were absolutely merited. We very much realized that people wanted Master Chief’s story of Halo 5...For some fans and certainly fans of Master Chief, it was a huge disappointment because they wanted more Chief."
He added, "People have become attached to him over the last fifteen years and they’ve started to sort of fill in the gaps that the character deliberately has for gameplay reasons with a genuine emotional attachment. We certainly underestimated that with Halo 5."
343 has since confirmed that the upcoming Halo Infinite will be a Master Chief-centric adventure, in the hope of avoiding the mixed reviews of Halo 5's campaign. Fingers are crossed.
