10 Convoluted Video Game Lores Even The Creators Don't Understand

The original "vanilla" release of Bungie's Destiny was widely criticised for its baffling approach to lore, with most of the game's story not actually being available in the game itself but via the related Grimoire website.

Thankfully Bungie listened to the vocal criticism and ensured to ditch this approach for Destiny 2, while steadily building an intriguing core mythos which has kept the fanbase hooked ever since.

Bungie has an uncommonly intimate relationship with their fans, intently listening to criticism and fielding suggestions to the extent of actually holding meetings with hardcore fans to resolve issues related to the game's lore.

Last year, Destiny 2 director Christopher Barrett held a lore "summit" with a few fans, who were able to voice their concerns regarding various aspects of the lore which contradicted one another, typically discrepancies between the release of the first and second Destiny.

This is ultimately a textbook example of a game's lore being so absurdly detailed - and, yes, convoluted - that only someone following it as a passionate hobby could possibly have the obsessive attention-to-detail necessary to find all the inconsistencies.

The fact that there are obvious tonal and thematic disconnects between the two games speaks volumes about the difficulties of keeping "live service" games consistent.
