10 CRAZIEST Things Nintendo Has Ever Done

7. The Infamous Australian NES Commercial

If you're an Australian who was a kid in the 80s, then I've probably just awoken some deep rooted childhood trauma and I am not sorry.

Advertising for video games was the wild west back in the 80's. After all, with such a wildly new concept as games that you can play on your television, how do you even approach advertising that?

Don't do this. Just - just avoid doing this ad. Altogether. There's your damn advice.

This nightmare made real features a bunch of earl, EARLY, CGI models of various NES characters, including duck hunt and Bowser, mocking the viewer about how they can never be defeated. They are Nintendo, and you cannot beat them.

Yeah, needless to say, we Americans were spared this horror, but the poor poor children of Australia weren't so lucky.

This ad HAD to have gone through Nintendo, or at least someone associated with the company since they sold the rights to make this ad. So either they were so incompetent they provided ZERO oversight, or they looked at this and legit thought it was a good use of their money.

I'm not sure which is worse.

John Tibbetts is a novelist in theory, a Whatculture contributor in practice, and a nerd all around who loves talking about movies, TV, anime, and video games more than he loves breathing. Which might be a problem in the long term, but eh, who can think that far ahead?
