Yes, The Architect is one of the original mages who defied the gods to enter the golden city, thus cursing the world forever with the Blights - repeated uprisings of subterranean Darkspawn intent on destroying all life in the name of their dormant Old Gods.

And sure - he was turned into a Darkspawn himself and now seeks to destroy all life with his own army of monsters, but hear me out: most Darkspawn are drones, compelled to free their Old Gods and follow them to war. The Architect, however, thinks for himself.

Unfortunately, he doesn't understand why and knows nothing of his past, but he can pass this free will onto other Darkspawn. He also detests war.

So how does he propose to end war? By infecting everyone with Blight so they're all equal. See? Good heart.

Fortunately, he soon realizes that this is a bad plan, and so decides to try finding the Old Gods himself and passing his power to them, hoping they'll turn good. Unfortunately, this also turns out be a bad plan, as he inadvertently causes the Blight at heart of the original game.
