Emil is a young boy cursed with the "ability" to turn anyone who looks into his eyes to stone. Wracked with guilt, Emil has chosen to live his life blindfolded, with only his butler to assist him as he lives his lonely life blind and shut in. And he is not at all creepy... yet.

After a timeskip, Emil enlists the hero, Nier, to help him find a cure for those turned to stone by his power. During the quest, Emil remembers that he was a lab experiment intended to use magic to create an "ultimate weapon." Emil was deemed a failure and discarded. His sister, however, was transformed into a skeletal beast, and eventually killed everyone in the lab.

Nier and Emil are forced to fight and defeat his sister, whereupon the two merge into one, allowing Emil control over his magic, but taking on the bizarre, moon-headed, skeletal body of his sister.

Despite looking like a monster, Emil retained his inner humanity, eventually sacrificing his body to save the other major characters. At the end we see his disembodied head, rolling through the desert, determined to track down his found family.
