A further example of Nintendo’s dark side, the next ghoulish Easter Egg can be found in the otherwise adorably wholesome Luigi’s Mansion.

Originally released on the GameCube in 2001, this colourful adventure starred Mario’s green hat wearing brother as he makes his way through a very haunted mansion in search of his shorter sibling. Armed with only a flashlight and a vacuum contraption, players will explore the mansion by solving various puzzles as they clear the home of its ghostly residents.

Despite it’s horror setting, the cutesy enemies and fun humour make Luigi’s Mansion as unthreatening as an episode of Scooby Doo. In fact, the most horrifying thing about it are the dreadful “boo” based puns used throughout.

Or at least this would be the most terrifying thing in the game if it weren’t for one small detail that has caught the attention of fans.

When answering a ringing phone at one point in the game after the lights go out, a lightning strike will illuminate Luigi’s shadow. Unsettlingly, though, his shadow gives the eerie impression of the beloved character being hung.

Haunting as this image is, this Easter Egg is more likely a bug caused by low camera angles rather than an intentional scare.
